May half term is nearly upon us, and if you’re planning to be on the Pembrokeshire Coast, you’ll want to find some fun, family friendly things to do. Here are our top picks for things to do in May half term in Pembrokeshire!

Discover Ramsey Island

May is the perfect time to be visiting Pembrokeshire, and the island of Ramsey is no exception. At this time of year, this popular island is bursting with colour and wildlife. From the bright sea pinks and the coconut aroma of gorse to the RSPB-protected seabirds, such as choughs, shags and kittiwakes, guillemots, skylarks and more recently, storm-pestrels, this month is one of vibrancy and activity on the island.

Boats leave from St Justinians for the short crossing to Ramsey. Boat trips to the island can be booked through Thousand Island Expeditions. Once on the island, there is a 3 1/2 mile rugged path that takes you around the cairns of Carn Llundain and Carn Ysgubor. If you’re feeling more relaxed, why not take a picnic and enjoy views towards Skomer island? Take your binoculars on a clear day and see if you can spot Ireland!

If you would rather take a boat trip around the island, which only takes a couple of hours, book with Falcon Boats for the perfect balance of education and thrills.

St Davids Cathedral Festival

What better way to visit the ancient cathedral that makes St Davids Britain’s smallest city than when it’s full of music? This music festival celebrates all things musical – from choral evensongs to youth choirs.

This 2024 festival runs from Friday May 24th – Wednesday May 29th, with lots of different music events. We’re especially looking forward to the Coffee Concerts every morning.

Check out St Davids Cathedral Festival website for tickets and further information.

Visit a Bug Farm

You’ve heard of Old Macdonald….well, Dr Beynon also has a farm, but hers is a little different – it’s full of bugs! This all-weather, award-winning working farm allows kids and adults alike to get to know some fascinating insects, grubs and bugs up close and personal! Dr Beynon’s Bug Farm is situated just north of St Davids and is a must-visit on your May half-term break.

Visit the Exotic Bugs Zoo, follow the pollinator trail, or visit Grub Kitchen, where they serve locally-sourced, home-cooked food.

Visit Llys Y Fran

Llys Y Fran is a beautiful reservoir that provides a rare inland lake in Pembrokeshire. This is a fantastic place to spend a day, with cycling routes, plenty of walking and an outdoor activity centre. Once you’ve finished exploring their 14km of trails, make sure you pay a visit to their cafe serving lovely lunches.

Have some fun at Folly Farm

Many of us remember visiting Folly Farm back when the main attraction was the Shire Horse, but things have definitely moved on since then! This is a day out that the whole family will be talking about for a long time. It’s now an Adventure Park and Zoo, with animals from giraffes to red pandas, and plenty of activities to keep the kids occupied.

And they absolutely haven’t lost sight of their roots. There’s a tractor ride and plenty of farm animals to see and pet. Booking for half term is essential!

Head to Oriel Y Parc

Oriel Y Parc is the tourist information centre at the top of St Davids, and provides so much more than just information! This May Half Term there are two exhibitions, one featuring artwork from Jackie Morris’ book, The Lost Words, which is for children and adults alike! There is also a Local Makers Craft Market on Saturday 1st June.

Step back in time at Pembroke Castle

Pembroke Castle is a magnificent place to visit at any time of year, and May Half Term is no different! From falconry to knight school, there’s plenty to keep the kids entertained, as well as letting their imaginations go wild with a walk around the castle itself.
