The Peninsula Food Market is an online farmer’s market where you can shop local produce directly from farmers and growers on the St Davids Peninsula. The Food Market offers a wide range of delicious produce – everything from fresh veg, meat, seafood, milk, cheese and eggs to ready meals, bread, cakes, ferments, seaweed, spreads and beverages.

You can choose between everyday basics and luxury items for a special treat. You might want to get fresh produce for your stay, or bring home some of the many delicacies on offer. The online platform enables locals and visitors to access this amazing produce, and it is very simple to use – place your order before Thursday noon and pick it up on a Saturday morning alongside locals, or get it delivered to your accommodation!

The story

The Food Market was set up during Covid by volunteers at Lower Treginnis Farm (Farms for City Children) as a way to get their produce to the local community whilst they were closed to school children. As the farm reopened its doors to schools, it asked local environmental and community social enterprise EcoDewi to take it on as a valued asset to the community.

EcoDewi is a Community Interest Company, which means that any profit goes back into supporting the community. The Food Market now serves a large number of producers, who all get to sell their produce directly to their customers with better financial margins than many shops and supermarkets offer. The produce is all gathered and distributed from the Rugby Club in St Davids.

The producers

So who are the local producers? The St Davids Peninsula is home to farmers, growers, fishermen, brewers, bakers and beekeepers. Some of them are well established family businesses whilst others are hobbyists. Among them you will find a number of community businesses, meaning that community members are directly involved and profit goes back into the local area.

Together they cherish and care for the beautiful coastline and the land it surrounds. The Food Market offers them a quick and easy route to market, encouraging new producers to start up. There is a list of all producers available on the online shop. Some of them are open to site visits, so you can go and see exactly where the produce comes from!

Local Food Resilience

The Peninsula Food Market carries the story of the land, sea and those who steward it. It helps to reduce the carbon footprint on food: fewer food miles, less packaging, less waste and a generally more environmentally sound production of the products. It’s a start towards creating better local food resilience and supports and encourages more producers to grow and produce food locally.
