Pembrokeshire has an abundance of space, so no matter how busy the coast is, you’ll always be able to find a quiet stretch of coast path or hidden beach. 2021 has already been a year like no other on the St Davids Peninsula, however, so if you’re planning to make the most of everything it has to offer, you will need to plan ahead. Here’s a guide to planning your perfect holiday in Pembrokeshire this year.
Book activities in advance
There’s so much to do on the Pembrokeshire coast, and this year it’s well worth doing a bit of research and booking in advance. Due to Covid procedures, some places like Folly Farm are only taking advanced bookings at the moment. The plus side, of course, is that you can rest easy in the knowledge that your place is secured and plan your day around your entry time.
Closer to home in St Davids, booking for outdoor activities and boat trips is essential. All are on reduced capacity, which means they are booking up quicker than usual. Again, looking on the bright side, that means more room for you and your group when you’ve got a question to ask or need to stretch your legs out.
No trip to St Davids is complete without a visit to St Davids Cathedral of course. It is open to visitors every day, and with staggered entry and track and trace forms to fill in, you may find yourself lounging in the sun while you wait – it’s a tough life!
Eating out
Pembrokeshire is bursting with fabulous places to eat and drink, and it is one of the highlights of a holiday here. Booking tables in advance is a must this year. If you fancy a takeaway instead, it’s worth giving them a call a few hours ahead or even the day before to ensure you avoid disappointment. Here’s a guide to the tastiest takeaways in St Davids!
Shopping
While it’s a good idea to arrive with the basics for your holiday, you’re definitely going to want to sample some local produce while you’re here! The St Davids Peninsula Food Hub is a fantastic scheme that collates lots of independent producers into one website. Order by Thursday, they bring it all together and you can pick it up on Saturday. Ideal for eating in or planning picnics for your holiday.
St Davids is a treasure trove for shopping lovers. Owners of independent shops have worked incredibly hard to make it safe for you to browse their beautiful places, and sometimes this means waiting outside for a little longer than usual. Please prepare to be patient, and know that it’s worth the wait! Here’s a guide to shopping in St Davids and Solva.
Dog-Friendly Beaches
Visiting with a pooch in tow? They’re going to have as great a time as you are! We know that you want to make sure to plan your day with them in mind, and while you may have researched dog-friendly places to eat and drink, you’ll also need to be aware of dog bans on some beaches in the summer. There aren’t many, but the ones there are are worth knowing about! Here’s our guide to dog-friendly beaches.
Book activity hire
You know to book outdoor guided activities, but what if you want to go it alone? TYF Adventure is a fantastic option for kit and bike hire in the centre of St Davids, and booking is highly recommended. While you’re there, make the most of the staff’s local knowledge and ask about safe, quiet places to try out your hire board or go for a cycle. They know all the best spots!
You time
A family holiday is fantastic fun, and we all know it’s important to carve out some ‘you time’. Book in for some pampering at Menevia Spa (you guessed it – in advance!) via their online booking system which makes it incredibly easy. Wild Yoga Studio in Solva offers drop-in classes – perfect while the family play on the beach – also available to book online.
Free activities
So what about if you just want to go with the flow, and see where you end up? There’s definitely room for that too! With so many free activities to be had, you can do your own thing and still have a fantastic holiday. Grab a crab line and some bacon and head to Solva Harbour for some crabbing, or go rock pooling on Caerfai beach. And the ultimate way to eat out in Pembrokeshire? A beach BBQ of course! Here’s our ultimate guide to getting the most from your barbecue experience.
