There are many things that bring people to Pembrokeshire; the fantastic food scene, independent shops, magnificent coast path, and all-round incredible views. On any Pembrokeshire to do list though, there have to be a fair few trips to the beach! Here’s a run down of what we think are the best beaches in Pembrokeshire.
Caerfai
Within walking distance of the centre of St Davids, Caerfai is a beautiful beach set below the spacious car park. Perfect for a swim on a still day! We recommend picking up some tasty treats from Losh’s Pasties in St Davids before making the journey to this stunning beach.
Caerfai is dog friendly all year round.
Whitesands
St Davids’ local surf beach, it’s also fantastic for walking, picnicking, sandcastle building… whatever takes your fancy! Easy parking and a brilliant cafe at Whitesands Beach House (perfect for some chips to go with your picnic!) Whitesands is around a 5-minute drive from St Davids.
Whitesands has a dog ban from May – September.
Newgale
The first glimpse you’ll get of the sea on your way to St Davids is on coming over the crest of the hill at Newgale. A long, stunning beach ideal for walking and water-sports. Fancy a surf lesson? Head to Newsurf across the road!
Dogs are allowed on the south end of Newgale all year round. The north end has a dog ban from May – September.
Porthselau
Just around the corner from Whitesands, you’ll find Porthselau, a smaller cove fantastic for sunbathing or rock pooling. What makes this beach extra special is that it’s only accessible via the coast path, and well worth the half hour walk from Whitesands.
Abereiddy
A perfect summer’s evening involves picking up some fish and chips from The Shed at Porthgain, drive to Abereiddy and eating them while you watch the sunset. The Blue Lagoon is just over the hill, which is a must-see while in Pembrokeshire.
Broad Haven
If you like the hustle and bustle of a seaside village, Broad Haven is for you! Fish and chip cafes, beach shops, lovely restaurants and of course, the big, beautiful beach. About a half an hour’s drive from St Davids, and great for an afternoon’s wander or a day on the beach.
Barafundle Bay and Beach
No list of the best beaches in Pembrokeshire is complete without the utterly stunning Barafundle, nestled amidst dunes and reachable only by a tranquil half-mile stroll from the closest car park. With its expansive stretches of golden sand and crystalline waters, Barafundle is often compared to the shores of the Caribbean. However, its pristine beauty comes with a caveat – there are no facilities available. Thus, visitors must carry all their provisions back up the cliffs upon departure.
Broad Haven South
While we adore the rugged beauty of North Pembrokeshire, we all love a day out to South Pembrokeshire once in a while, and it’s definitely worth exploring if you’re here for a week! Head to Bosherston, walk through the lily ponds and find yourself on a vast, soft-sanded golden beach at Broad Haven South.
Freshwater West
A little North of Broad Haven South, Freshwater West is very much ‘As Seen On TV!’ Featured in Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows and Ridley Scott’s Robin Hood, this beach is a favourite among families, walkers and surfers alike! Banked with sand dunes behind, have a search for Dobby’s grave.
These are only a few of the many, many beaches and hidden coves dotted around this incredible coastline. Which are your favourite? Find out on your next visit to the Pembrokeshire coast.

You’ve missed four of the best!
Druidstone – wonderful beach with caves and rockpools. OK the parking can be a hit and miss, but not to be missed!
Traeth llyfn
The best beach on the North Coast, far better than Abereiddy, even if it is harder to pronounce.
Marloes – huge beach with good views of Skokholm and much nicer in our opinion than the Freshwaters.
Gwadn – a hidden treasure next to Solva harbour. An easy walk from Solva at low tide and an exciting mountaineering adventure at high tide.
These are some great suggestions Max, thank you. So many lovely beaches to choose from here but we love all your suggestions as well.
